How to Pick a Good Roommate

If you are a college student who will be looking for off campus housing accommodations, it is vital that you take specific care in choosing a roommate.  While choosing a compatible roommate will afford you with a superior living arrangement, picking the wrong roommate can have adverse side effects not only on your quality of life, but on your grades as well.

If you have already found a suitable place to dwell, but are in need of a roommate to share costs, placing ads is a great way to find one.  Ads can be placed in student newspapers and publications, on community and college bulletin boards, as well as on the World Wide Web.  When subleasing out a room, you want to make sure that your roommate’s lifestyle is compatible with yours. Placing an ad, then interviewing all of the applicants is a good way to weed out those individuals who aren’t such a good fit.  After you have narrowed down the applicants, take a bit more time discovering what their extracurricular activities are, their study habits, as well as what type of environment they are searching for. Whether it be a quiet, cozy place to sublease, or a noisy party atmosphere they are looking for, it is best to know their expectations in order to determine if you are willing to sublease to them or not.

Many college students are able to find a suitable roommate without placing any ads by talking to fellow classmates, and allowing their sublease opportunity to spread by word of mouth.  Many a fine roommate has been discovered this way, as students who are studying for the same major often have the same interests and study habits, which make for a perfect roommate combination!

Sharing an apartment or dorm room can be a challenge, and it is best to pick a good roommate from the beginning.  Having to move people in and out of your housing accommodations because they don’t make good roommates will certainly wreak havoc on your already hectic life.  When choosing a roommate, be up front about what shared costs are involved, the noise level you are willing to tolerate, as well as how you feel about overnight guests.  While no true “perfect” roommate exists, you will be able to find a suitable roommate who may just end up becoming your best friend.

If you are packing up and getting ready to head off to college and have not yet found a place to live, you will probably find yourself searching for a sublet.  When scouring the local ads, have some of the decisions made about what type of roommate you desire.  Do you wish to live with someone of the same gender?  How much rent can you afford?  Do you require a certain type of environment?  When replying to ads, make sure to ask all of the pertinent questions before setting up an appointment.  What looks like a good living arrangement on paper may not be such a good thing in reality.  With some time and a bit of patience, finding a good roommate is a possibility.
