Meeting People and Making New Friends at College or University
It is never easy to make new friends in a new environment but it does help if you are all in the same boat together, remember this when you strike out on your college career.
University and college students have several very important things in common, they are away from home, they are suddenly living with other people whether it is off campus with roommates or on, and they are poor. Let’s face it, if you don’t make friends and meet people at college, you could starve.
Meeting new people is easier than it has ever been. You don’t even have to do it face to face any more, you can literally find out everything you need to know about a person before making that move to become friends. No, I’m not talking about becoming a stalker or hiring a private detective, I’m talking about internet chat rooms.
These days colleges and universities have an entire entourage of college student chat rooms, both public and private. This is a great way to break the ice if you are shy or to find like minded people. If your interests are with a certain group, do some research and see where these people hang out and what their general mind set is. This can be an important step at colleges these days considering that things like an animal lovers group can be completely different than you expected, having not researched it and attending the very first meeting. Maybe these aren’t your warm and fuzzy types but instead people who really enjoy eating meat. Wow what a shock to the system that could be!
If the internet isn’t your cup of megabytes, why not try the campus clubs. Every college campus has a club or group for any number of things. From religious to gay to the computer club, your people are out there, you just need to find them. Usually colleges and universities will provide students with a listing of the clubs on campus.
Finally, you can’t find friends if you stay in your dorm room. Okay, maybe you will find that you need more than imaginary friends or Spot the spider to hang out with. Get out and mingle among the other students. You don’t want your college year book bio to read, “stayed in room, not sure what he looked like, most likely to be a serial killer”. Get out of that room and make friends.
College can be a great experience and many people who make friends while attending college keep them for life, so go on, make a move and take a chance.
