Tips for Getting the Most out of Your College or University Experience
College is a great experience. It’s an opportunity to make new friends, learn new things, and launch into adult life. If this is your first time away from home and family, it can also be a trying time. Being prepared for college and some of the pitfalls involved can assure that college is an enjoyable and exciting time in your life. Here are a few tips that can help you maximize the experience.
1. Learn the lay of the land. College students or those considering college can benefit from getting to know the college they’re attending well in advance. Take every opportunity to tour the campus, and the community around the campus. Find out what resources are available for you on campus. Many new students report being homesick or depressed at first. Most colleges provide many social outlets and also offer counseling if need be. Also getting to know your roommate or roommates in advance can help you establish a working, trusting relationship with them. Getting familiar with your new environment will reduce your stress and help ensure that by the time class’s start, you are comfortable in the new environment.
2. Making friends and acquaintances in each of your classes can also yield many benefits. For example, in the event you miss a class, you may be able to get class notes. Additionally, this will help you expand your network of friends.
3. Many experts also suggest that getting to know one or more of your professors each semester. Not only is a professor a valuable resource to advice you, but also cultivating positive relationships with professors will help you establish references for jobs and for scholarships.
4. In addition most campuses have a career center to help you find work that fits your busy lifestyle.
5. Take time to find the right roommates(s) if you’re looking for off campus housing. The more you know about them; their likes, values and lifestyle, the less likely you are to encounter conflicts. College students can build life long friendships with their college roommates, but communication and respect are essential to keep the peace!
6. Procrastination is not your friend! Organize your life as much as you can. Keep your study place in good order and organized. The sheer volume of work through out a semester can be daunting at times. You may well find yourself buried under stacks of books and papers if you’re not careful. Finding assignments and notes at midterm will be a lot easier and reduce your stress, if you keep things readily accessible.
7. Eat right. College students with hectic lifestyles often live on junk food. Keeping your apartment stocked with fresh vegetables, vitamins, and health snack foods will help keep you and your roommates(s) healthy.
8. It’s time to budget. Especially if you’re not accustomed to managing your own money, this can be a huge problem. Credit card offers start coming out of the woodwork and many college students get into big trouble with them.
9. Make time for yourself. Schedule a time for relaxation and enjoyment.
10. Balance. Work hard, but have fun too. College is a special time in your life. Make the most of it.
